Beavers

Try new things. Make new friends. Joining Beavers is just the beginning of your big adventure

Beaver Scouts are usually aged between 6 and 8 years old. We run two Colonies which meet once a week on Mondays or Thursdays. Sessions run from 5.45-7pm at Cholsey Scout Hut. We have a programme packed full of fun activities to introduce our young people to new experiences and learn new skills. We have trips in the local area and get involved in the community. Each year we also run a Christmas Sleepover and a Summer Camp, which is often their first night away from home so is a real adventure.
Badges

Our programme is based around all our young people achieving their Beaver Challenge Awards and Beaver Activity Badges. We aim to support all our Beavers to achieve their Chief Scout Bronze Award before they move up to Cubs so each session will cover different elements of the badge framework. There is also a selection of Staged Badges they can work on from home – for example if they go to swimming or music lessons, these can count towards earning some more badges.

Colony and Lodges

Our Beaver Colonies are organised into smaller groups called Lodges (i.e. Green Lodge. Orange Lodge) and each Lodge has their own dedicated leader (i.e. Green Beaver, Orange Beaver) supporting the Lodge Leader(s), the oldest Beaver(s) in the lodge. Every beaver will have a chance to be a Lodge Leader before the move on to Cubs.

Uniform

Scouting is a uniformed organisation and our Beavers are identified by their distinct turquoise sweaters and the 1st Cholsey Scout Group red and navy blue necker. We provide the group necker and the turquoise branded sweater can be sourced second hand or new from uniform shops or online retailers. They do not need the full uniform for their first session – usually by their fourth session, if they are happy to stay with us. We provide all their badges.

Moving on

Young people can join Beavers in the three months leading up to their sixth birthday. They usually move on to the next section, Cub Scouts, between 7½ and 8½ years old. It may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs.

Beaver leaders

All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure Scouting is safe, inclusive and accessible. Some lead the Colony week in and week out. Others visit occasionally to help run a session or drop in to share their skills. No matter how much time you have to spare, find out about volunteering on your own terms.
